Brian Birk

Managing Partner

As a Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Sun Mountain Capital, Brian sits on all of the Firm’s Investment Committees and is a board member of Sun Mountain Capital portfolio companies Aspen Avionics (Chair), Exagen Inc (Chair; NASDAQ: XGN), and Green Theme Technologies. Past investments include Lumidigm (acquired by HID Global).

Brian is active throughout the Rocky Mountain and Southwest regions and is a current member and past Chairman of the Board of the Rocky Mountain Venture Capital Association.

Prior to co-founding Sun Mountain Capital, Brian was a co-founder or senior executive at several start-ups including MetaWeb (acquired by Google), Prowess Software, The Bios Group, and Applied Minds. He also spent six years with the Boston Consulting Group where he was a senior member of the North American Technology and Life Sciences practice areas.

Brian transitioned from the operating to the investment side when he joined Fort Washington Capital Partners in the early 2000’s, an Ohio based investment management firm. He was Vice President and Director of Private Equity at Fort Washington, where he helped to establish and manage a number of private equity direct investment funds, secondary investment funds and fund of funds programs.

Immediately after college, Brian was a trainee at The General Electric Company. He then became an entrepreneur, co-founding several start-ups, including MIKON Corporation and Brainstem.

Brian earned his MBA from Northwestern University’s J.L. Kellogg School, where he graduated number one in his class and was awarded the Austin Fellowship for academic achievement. He completed his undergraduate studies in Economics at Carleton College.
